One Cable for Everything: USB-C, 240 Watts and the EU Rules

Count the chargers in your home. For most households the answer runs well past the number of people who live there: a brick for the laptop, another for the tablet, a handful of phone chargers, and a tangle of cables whose purpose nobody remembers.

Regulators and engineers have spent the past five years trying to end that. Two changes, one legal and one technical, now make a single charger for most devices a realistic goal.

The EU made USB-C the law

On 28 December 2024, the European Union’s common charger rules took effect. From that date, new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, earbuds, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, handheld games consoles and portable navigation devices sold in the EU had to charge over USB-C. On 28 April 2026, the rules extended to laptops.

The rules also let shoppers buy devices without a bundled charger, so they can reuse the one they already own. The European Commission estimates the change will save consumers about €250 million a year on unnecessary chargers and cut around 11,000 tonnes of discarded chargers annually.

The law applies in Europe, but manufacturers rarely build separate hardware for one market. The practical effect has been USB-C nearly everywhere.

The power ceiling went up

A shared connector only helps if it can carry enough power. For years, USB Power Delivery topped out at 100 watts, enough for phones and most thin laptops but not for larger machines.

In 2021 the USB Implementers Forum announced USB Power Delivery 3.1, which added an Extended Power Range. It introduced fixed voltages of 28, 36 and 48 volts, delivering 140, 180 and 240 watts. Cables that carry the higher levels must meet the updated USB Type-C specification for 240-watt operation.

That jump brought gaming laptops, larger monitors and power-hungry workstations within reach of the same port your phone uses.

Where the catch sits

The connector is universal. The capability is not. A USB-C cable that looks identical to another may carry 60 watts or 240, and slow data or fast. A charger may offer 140 watts on one port and 20 on the next. Your devices negotiate power with the charger through the cable, and the weakest part of the chain sets the speed.

That is why the fine print matters more now than when every device had its own plug.

What a USB-C-first setup looks like

Charger makers have responded with fewer, more capable products. MAGFAST, a New York charging company, sells a range built around that approach. The company says its Powerbrick Pro 140 uses gallium nitride, or GaN, components and offers 140 watts across three USB-C ports and one USB-A port. It rates its Lux Pro cables at 240 watts with 10Gbps data transfer, which covers the top of the Power Delivery range.

GaN chargers matter because they run cooler and pack more power into a smaller body than older silicon designs, which is how a multi-port 140-watt charger can fit in a bag.

How to consolidate without losing speed

  • Start with your hungriest device. Check the laptop’s rated charging wattage and buy a charger that meets it on a single port.
  • Buy cables rated for the job. For anything above 100 watts you need a cable built for Extended Power Range. Read the rating, not the colour.
  • Keep one legacy port. A single USB-A port covers older accessories while you phase them out.
  • Recycle what you retire. A drawer of old chargers is e-waste waiting to happen.

The EU rules settled the shape of the plug. Choosing the right charger and cable is still your job, and it is the part that decides whether one charger can replace five.
